Welcome to Merengue!

Every day we serve to a very diverse ethnicity of clientele, who
through our dishes, experience something that we have called
“A Dominican Dining Experience”, which takes them back to our
roots.

We were the first Latino restaurant to have delivery service. The
first to have a variety of dishes as daily specials, plus an
extensive menu full of Dominican and International dishes; and
the first, to have a professional Catering Service that has become
the most prestigious and renowned in the state of Massachusetts.

We have catered from the State House to the most famous
Universities and exclusive function rooms, like “The City View
Room”, located at the observatory in the John Hancock building
in the City of Boston, where dignitaries, personalities and famous
artists have enjoyed our food.

Imperatives: Merengue Restaurant at the Improper Bostonian
Imperatives
The Improper Bostonian, August 2009

The plantain, that gluey cousin to the common banana, is the (slightly bent) pillar of Dominican
cooking. “We eat plantains for breakfast, lunch and dinner,” laughs Nivia Pina, co-owner of
Merengue, a popular Dominican restaurant in Roxbury. “For breakfast we boil them. For lunch and
dinner we fry them ripe or green. We make mofongo,” a sort of garlicky plantain mash. But a
plantain is nothing without rice and beans, or steak and onions, or fried chicken chunks, or
empanadas. Pina, a Puerto Rican native, and her Dominican-born husband, Hector, have built a
“mini-industry” on the basis of such dishes.
