ZAGAT GUIDEBOOK 2007-08

If you can’t get to the Dominican Republic anytime soon, this virtual island escape,
with “native art adorning”, crayon-bright walls, is only as far as Roxbury, alongside
“mouthwatering” mashed plantains, mounds of fried meats and frilled seafood
remain “tasty and authentic” “down to the last morsel” – and you can “feed a family
for less” than a cab-fare, never mind plane tickets, even “slow” service lets you
pretend you’re on beach time.

Travel Guide to New England: A Special Issue
Editors' Choice – Yankee Travel Guide (2007)

You’re more likely to hear Spanish than English on this stretch of Blue Hill Avenue,
where folks hankering for Caribbean cooking come to Merengue. Not surprisingly,
that crowd includes a host of Red Sox players (led by Big Papi). The bar dining
area is painted in turquoise trimmed with pink to emulate an island beach shack,
while the larger dining room is an explosion of fuchsia. Big tropical paintings by
Dominican artists hang prominently, and there’s a steady soundtrack of Spanish-
language music videos. You can go native by starting with fried cassava with garlic
dipping sauce and ordering an island classic mofongo (mashed plantains stuffed
with pork or chicken). But Merengue does sophisticated Creole dishes, too, such as
the chef’s special shrimp-stuffed chicken breast in a tomato and sweet pepper sauce
or kingfish steak in vinaigrette. Dessert? Flan, creamy and dripping with caramel.

PHANTOM GOURMET: PHANTOM'S GREAT ATE FOR...
Latin 03/18/2003

The Best: Dominican

Merengue in Roxbury, MA serves up traditional Dominican cuisine, which consists of
a lot of meat and seafood dressed with a tropical twist. Phantom loves the Mofongo,
a hefty mound of mashed plantains with pork, served with chicken broth. The
crowd is largely Dominican (a great indication of authenticity), and the atmosphere is
colorful and cheery. Phantom recommends ordering up one of their homemade,
freshly squeezed juices like Orange, Lemonade or Passion Fruit. And the daily
specials posted on the wall are a good bet for a memorable meal.
